Undertopia follows two former Afghan soldiers who fled Afghanistan and resettled in the United States as refugees, where they now make granola through a social-service organization. Guided by their recollections and directions, the installation was constructed as a spatial interpretation of the places they remember—an inevitably fragmentary reconstruction that captures only a fraction of what they experienced.
Within this reconstructed landscape, their projected interviews inhabit a veiled sanctuary, folding past and present, warzone and refuge, into the same space. Through this convergence, Undertopia reflects on the entangled relationships between war and faith, nation and family, and the individual strangled between them.
